In Response To: Starting a TEFL Certification Course at my school (Eric Smith)

I am an ESL department head at a small private high school in America. Our school is looking to better utilize our space over the summer, so I've pitched an ESL certification course as a possibility.

I'm not qualified to administer a TEFL certificate (I'm only CELTA certified), but we're looking to put together a course that would supply 6-10 certificates for a month-long intensive course. We would bring in 10-20 ESL students from around the globe to live on our campus for the TEFL students to teach. They would receive the proper training from two certified TEFL teachers, get 100-120 hours of practicum, and be teaching bone fide ESL students who would be there for a summer ESL course.

I am mainly wondering the best route for getting this done. Has anybody any experience setting up a course like this? I feel like our school could supply TEFL certificates for young adults looking for certification, a worthwhile ESL summer course for children and adolescents, and a solid month-long teaching gig for TEFL trainers.

I assume you're a member of TESOL International Association. That's who you should be contacting for guidance, especially since there are a multitude of factors involved. Also, do an Internet search on: 'setting up a tesol certificate course'. Considering how long this process takes, don't count on implementing your program until next year if you want it done right.

A potentially more viable option for your school this upcoming summer is to sponsor a foreign language immersion program or camp. For example, check out 'College of William and Mary Language Houses' and 'Summer Immersion at Saint Michaelís College'.
