I am sure when people read that the CELTA course involves '20 hour days' 7 days per week x 4 weeks, they think this is an exaggeration. It is not. There were days where fellow students just did not go to bed in order to meet rigid deadlines. I would call the level of expectation inhumane, quite frankly. I certainly never slept more than 5 hours. And I worked on lesson plans on the bus on the way to and from the program and I ate while working...frantically. It WAS the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. Is there any reason that the CELTA program has to be so challenging and time consuming and so incredibly stressful? Is this the army where one's mettle is tested?

As far as the curriculum goes, I expected it would be all about grammar rules but really it's all about how to structure lessons...and it is very rigid. There is no room (or time) for connection with students, for encouraging discussion or getting to know about the students. Now that I have been teaching for 6 years since the course, (and I consider myself to be a teacher who is passionate, committed and really interested in the progress of my students), I see that the CELTA program contributed very little in the whole scheme of things. Since the program,I have done all the research and learning myself. There are certain principles which I am glad to have learned such as very little TT (teacher talk), eliciting grammar explanations from the students instead of instructing/teaching at them...and that this universal 'communicative approach' does not include activities where one reads out loud unless small bits for pronunciation purposes.

I think quite honestly, that 90% of what makes up a good teacher comes from the person him or herself. Drive, enthusiasm, sincerity, positivity...CARING; these are qualities you have or don't ...but that you can probably work on to some degree. But they are outside the CELTA program.

I don't see the necessity of making people actually suffer for a full month to earn the certification. Perhaps you could make an introductory program of one month that one could do at home leading up to the course. Then one could ease up on the program itself. This could take the enormous pressure off the students and make it somewhat enjoyable.
