In Response To: Realisticly Speaking! (Omar)

I'll be travelling a lot and I'm thinking of getting my teaching certification to teach English abroad. I do see ads for english teachers abroad but the advertisers and schools make it sound good by saying there's lots of demand, pays well, travel around the world..etc. I wanted to know from actual teachers out there, what's it really like:

Are there enough hours? or will end up getting 2 hours a week and the pay for that will go towards taking a cab to get the place I'm teaching?

If I'm in a country already and I find work, will I have to leave the country to get a work visa and come back?

And so on. Can someone please tell me what it's really like out there. I don't tust what the schools and employers are saying.

I suggest you stop perusing dazzling ads for TEFL cert courses for a moment and instead, take a look at some real job postings starting with the ones on the Cafe (eslcafe.com/joblist/). You'll find that TEFL has morphed from being a pleasant distraction for adventurous backpackers and tourists into an actual profession where even the lowest teachers can be held accountable. Similarly, head over to the Cafe's jobs discussion forums (forums.eslcafe.com/job/) for a realistic picture of what TEFL is like.
