In Response To: ESL/EFL/TESL/TESOL programs (Jay Snyder)

I am looking for a certification program that will enable me to secure a career teaching English overseas. I already have a Master's degree in English and a Master's degree in Education (Curriculum and Instruction emphasis), and a Bachelor's in English. I have over 12 years experience teaching high school English in Florida and a semester teaching English composition at the college level. I've received information from Oxford Seminars and looked at the Ontesol programs. I do not have a great deal of money for yet another MA degree either. In addition, I have two children to care for as I work on this program.

Any advice on the programs I mentioned or others that would help me secure a good job teaching English overseas?

Fortunately, you have some options: 1) Pursue an ESOL Endorsement as an add-on to your Florida teaching license; or 2) enroll in a highly-recognized/internationally-accepted teacher training course such as the CELTA (offered in Florida) or SIT TESOL; or 3) consider obtaining a Graduate Certificate in TEFL---one that's taught on campus and includes a supervised practicum (check your local universities); or 4) forget about TEFL because your current qualifications and experience easily meet the requirements for teaching English (as a subject not EFL) in international and public schools abroad.

You didn't state whether you want to teach children or adults, but the above will set you up for teaching EFL in both situations. However, if option 4 piques your interest, I suggest you take a look at the websites for Teach Away, Seek Teachers, and International Schools Reviews for job opportunities.

Pass on Oxford Seminars' mediocre TEFL cert courses. Ditto for Ontesol since not all international employers accept TEFL certs that include an on-line component. Although both of these programs are budget friendly, if you choose to go with a TEFL certificate course, stick with those that either carry academic credit or are known/accepted throughout the world (as suggested above). Other posters may tell you a cert isn't necessary for TEFL jobs given your education and experience. However, the fact that you're the caregiver of two children means you should make yourself as marketable as possible for the better TEFL jobs abroad---jobs that offer a solid salary and rich benefits for you and your family.

For info on teaching EFL in specific countries/regions, head over to the Cafe's jobs discussion forums (forums.eslcafe.com/job/).
