In Response To: On line classes worth it? (Ceema)

I am currently teaching advanced ESL as a community center volunteer and I'm enjoying it so much that I'd like to try teaching abroad next year - possibly in Central or South America, or SE Asia. I am also going to start teaching the intermediate class in the fall. I want to get some type of certificate but it is not possible for me to take a live class because I work full time.

It seems that the biggest downfall of on line programs is that they don't offer the practical experience, but since I am already teaching would it make sense for me to do something on line? Or are employers really looking for a certificate from a live program with practicum?

I already have a Master's degree in Social Work. Any advice is appreciated!

You haven't been properly assessed as a teacher, so just because you've been teaching doesn't mean you've been doing it well. A legit (on-site) TEFL cert course is one that includes a supervised/observed teaching practice component with real students. The best certificate courses are the CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, and SIT TESOL brands; however, there are no-name equivalent TEFL certs as well. Avoid on-line courses; they won't serve you well in the long run as many employers don't accept them. Anyway, if you don't have time for an on-site teacher training course, consider getting your teaching training in the country you want to teach in.
