Certification for teaching private lessons

I'm interested in becoming a private tutor for those who want to improve their English speaking skills (in the U.S. and, potentially, when I travel or live abroad in the future). Does anyone have any advice as to what level of certification I should seek - TEFL? TESOL? Considering my goal, is certification necessary at all?
