In Response To: Getting certifications? Fill me in please? (DaEslGuy)

Just curious on the best certifications i know there is trinity and celta. What certifications do i need to be a ESL? Do i even need certifications? Whats the most accredited place to get my certifications? I need a legitimate fill in i cant tell whats a flop and whats not. Financially i can afford the programs.

What you need depends on where you plan to teach. Some employers don't require a TEFL cert, while others are fine with just any certificate. Then there are employers that expect teachers to have a CELTA or equivalent TEFL cert (i.e., 120 hours of face-to-face instruction that includes supervised teaching practice with real students). Look at the requirements on job ads for your target country and let that be your guide.

Keep in mind that even if a cert isn't needed for the job, it may be required in order to get a work permit for that particular country. Anyway, if in doubt, get either a CELTA, SIT TESOL, or Trinity CertTESOL. I also suggest you start scouring through this forum and the job discussion forum to acquaint yourself with teaching ESL/EFL---to fill yourself in, so to speak.
