In Response To: BS in Early Childhood (Carlos)

I am attaining a BS in Early Childhood Education with an ESL endorsement. I was wondering how this equates to the many that have MA in other fields. Do I still have to have a TESOL certification? Or will my current BS be suffice in trying to obtain a job overseas as an English teacher?

TESOL certification? Do you expect to teach ESOL abroad? If so, where? I ask because teachers with Early Childhood Education degrees generally teach primary school grades whether in an international school or in private and public schools on their home soil. Moreover, the students who attend most international schools are the children of native, English-speaking expats (e.g., dependents of US diplomats, business professionals, US military, missionaries, and even teachers), so they certainly don't require English language lessons. In fact, I once attended an international school when my family was stationed abroad; my classmates and I were all native speakers. Plus, English is used in every subject area because the curricula follows the same standards as the schools in the US, UK, Canada, etc., as a continuation of the child's education.

If you're hoping to teach ESL/EFL abroad, then you may need to reevaluate your educational path. Take a look at Teach Away's site to see what international school positions your degree in Early Childhood Ed qualifies you for.
