In Response To: esol endorsement or certification (jennifer)

I'm confused. I'm getting a master's in communications and have the opportunity to add on an esol endorsement. I want to teach English abroad for several years after graduation. Should I get the endorsement, and if so, will I still need to be certified? Or would it be more cost and time effective to just get certified and not add the endorsement. I appreciate any feedback.

State ESOL endorsements are not the same as a teaching license, which many international schools abroad require. The endorsement is for teachers who teach content (e.g., math, language arts, science, history, etc.) to children in the US whose first language isn't English. Being fluent in a second language is generally required as well. Keep in mind, you won't be teaching ESL/EFL abroad to children, but rather one of the subjects listed specific to your (undergrad?) major. Check the job ads for the countries you plan to teach in and let that be your guide as to what you need.

However, assuming your target learners will be adults, forget about the ESOL endorsement because it's not relevant to adult learning situations. You'd need a TEFL certificate; the most recognized worldwide is a CELTA followed by SIT TESOL and Trinity CertTESOL. Again, let the job ads will give you a clear idea of what you need.
