In Response To: Re: Tesols.com/Groupon (Tina Greggs)

Many Tefl/Tesol courses are not accredited and are not required to be so. That does not mean the course is not legit. The groupon for Tesols.com was not a hoax or fraudulent. Someone also wrote that the online hours don't count. That's absurd and obviously this person has not been to school in awhile because many classes are offered online and COUNT! If you go to the tesol website it lists the certification requirements and course requirements for institutions offering the class. It's too bad people talk themselves out of a good thing. I have a friend who's been teaching overseas for the past 5 years and another who is just finished with the course and is leaving for Korea in August. If you're a skeptic that's cool but it is legitimate.

Since your response is tied to my post (albeit, 6 months ago), I assume you're referring to me as the person who wrote "online hours don't count." However, that's not what I stated. What's absurd is your comment that hours from a mediocre online TEFL course from a for-profit business count in the same manner as an online academic course at an accredited university. Apples and oranges---there's no comparison. Don't be fooled by TESOLS' use of the word "graduating" when referring to completion of their course.

Like many other courses, this particular online TEFL cert lacks that critical supervised/assessed, hands-on teaching practice component with real students. (Watching videos of people teaching doesn't cut it.) Plus, online TEFL certs from these types of providers are far from being "internationally recognised," which this one claims to be. It would be acceptable only to those employers who don't care whether the teacher has a TEFL cert or not. That limits job seekers with online certs to certain countries (such as Korea and Japan) and/or teaching situations like language schools.

Also, their list of countries as "some of the best places to teach abroad" is very misleading. For instance, the UAE is not an option for someone with an online TEFL cert expecting to get an entry-level teaching position in a language school. For starters, these schools hire from a pool of local expats (sponsored dependents) and not from abroad. Additionally, the majority of UAE opportunities for teaching adults are in university foundation year programs, and these positions require a relevant MA + 3 years of university-level experience (gained post-degree).

No skepticism, just a reality check.
