In Response To: relaxed CETLA training site (Randall)

I am a 'golden hand shaker'--forced retirement from academia as a result of the 2008 economic 'down-turn.' Anybody have any experience with a CETLA training site where they have a relaxed attitude? I recently got a TEFL/TESL certificate but would like to get the "premium union card". Just don't want to be faced with an attitude of 'false rigorousness' to impress the other people. (I already went through that with my PhD studies and working in academia.) Thanks for suggestions.

If your interest is teaching English as a foreign language, then you mean CELTA and not CETLA. The latter stands for Howard University's Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Assessment and has nothing to do with TEFL.

The problem with your expectations of finding a laid-back, unpretentious CELTA course provider is that there's no guarantee you'll get exactly that since personnel, trainers, etc., could (and do) change. However, if you were able to handle a doctoral program, then a CELTA course shouldn't be too rough for you. By the way, the CELTA is an entry-level teaching qualification that doesn't even require a BA for program acceptance, so it's certainly not a "premium" union card when compared to a TEFL-related masters degree.
