In Response To: Masters vs. Graduate Certificate (Jason Hendricks)

I have taught ESL to youngsters in Korea for the past 9 years and am planning to enroll in a graduate course in TESOL. Obviously an MA will be more valuable to me in the ESL job market, however, I wonder if a grad level Certificate program will serve me just as well. I am anxious to teach in several other countries and would like to be an attractive candidate to more exclusive schools off the beaten ESL track as well as the usual locales/employers. What do you think is the best path given my experience and goals? Thanks

What countries are you interested in pursuing your ESL/EFL teaching career? If you plan on returning to the U.S., Canada, Australia, definitely a Masters degree from a credible recognized university will help your future academic ambitions.

Also, if you are considering the Middle East where there are some academic institutions you want to be "...exclusive schools off the beaten ESL track..." many require a Masters degree in second language acquisition because the competition is ferocious.

Again, if you plan on being in second language teaching for the long haul, a credible Masters degree in this field will bode you well.
