In Response To: TEFL Training to teach in Asia (JB)

I'd like to teach in Asia, preferably China, but I am open to other places where I might be able to save a good amount of money. My question is, is it better to take a TEFL course in the U.S. and then look for work? I had thought about doing a course in Thailand just to be in Thailand for a few weeks, then trying to find work in more lucrative places. I don't have much money saved, so I was concerned about already being in Asia after the course with no job. Thoughts?

My understanding is that the majority of employers in China don't hire from abroad. In other words, job seekers need to already be in country and prepared approach institutes and schools for face-to-face introductions. So, if you get your TEFL training in China, you'd be there anyway and will have already acclimated to the culture, learned about the students' language issues, and scouted potential jobs. Some TEFL cert course providers state they 'guarantee' you a job once you successfully complete their training, but that usually entails teaching only at schools they partner with, which may not be ideal for you.

TEFL jobs seem to be plentiful in China and in other parts of Asia. However, you haven't indicated if you have at least a BA, which is key in determining where you can teach. To get more exposure and responses to your questions from those already teaching in the region, I suggest you go to the ESL Cafe's job discussion forums (forums.eslcafe.com/job/) --- specifically to the China forum. You can browse the threads in any of the Asia forums but posting your questions requires you to register.
