You are being proactive when trying to stay alert to "diploma mills" who scam potential students.

Most posters would agree that a CELTA is a good start. It is a basic English language training certificate to get you comfortable teaching English. It may also provide you with contacts for an initial starting teaching position.

Another avenue is investigating local universities or colleges in your area that may offer TESL courses, certificate, and/or diploma.

There certainly is a niche market for well trained experienced business people who want to teach ESL or EFL. But experience in both areas - business and teaching - is what potential language teaching employers seek.

So, again, to begin try an entry level teaching certificate - CTESL or university or college - to get you started.

Be aware that remuneration for ESL teaching is not very substantial especially if you are trying to support a family.
