Learning song lyrics or poetry in a second language by heart is easier than prose or set conversation pieces in an old style formal class setting, sitting at desks staring at the teacher. However, acting out conversations in role play is a better way of making progress in the target language. Nevertheless, singing is great fun and, depending on where the students are going, it is worthwhile teaching them traditional or popular songs of that area. At higher levels some people have learned German through Wagnerian operas or enhanced their English vocabulary through Gilbert and Sullivan and musicals, or French through Offenbach. It is worth looking at research or ancecdotal literature to see how much English Korean, Japanese, and Chinese students get from watching foreign movies with subtitles and singing from text in karaoke rooms.
