Anyway, I took an RSA TEFL certificate for adults about 20 years ago and have obviously been working with many children who are second language learners on a constant basis. I now want to go solely into adult ESL teaching but feel I need to update my qualifications but am not sure what would be best. Any suggestions?

I had to look this one up, but the RSA cert you completed two decades ago is now known as CELTA. Over time, teaching techniques and approaches, teacher resources and of course, modern technology have certainly made an impact on how we teach EFL. That being said, you didn't say where and what teaching situation you were interested in nor mention your academic credentials, but if your goal is to teach for the better employers overseas, consider taking the CELTA again (or Trinity certTESOL or SIT TESOL) to refresh your skills plus indicate on your CV that your training is current and not from 20 years ago. That should put you on the right track.
