In Response To: Distance MA TESOL for the Middle East? (Jonathan Kay)

I have been teaching EFL in Japan for about 12 years and am looking for a change. My plan is to complete a distance MA TESOL with the University of Nottingham and apply for jobs in the Middle East. Distance degrees without an on-campus component are often mentioned as unacceptable by employers in Saudi, Dubai, etc. Though the degree does not mention the mode of delivery anyone who reads my CV will see I was working outside the UK throughout the 3 year program. What should I do to avoid problems with applications in the future? Is the answer to follow the MA TESOL with a DELTA? Is that not backwards?

It could be a problem, especially if the employer asks, point blank, if your degree was obtained via distance learning. It's not likely to raise the eyebrows of UAE employers; however, in Saudi Arabia, this tends to be an issue more with government institutions and not with private ones. Moreover, be aware that the better employers in the Gulf only consider experience gained after the applicant's highest degree and teaching qual when evaluating qualifications and determining salary.

For more responses as well as advice, I suggest you post your specific teaching experience, academic credential(s), teaching qualification (TEFL cert), and questions on the ESL Cafe's general Mid East job discussion forum.
