Having some kind of second language learning experience or some kind of teaching experience will not actually make an online cert 'perfectly fine' in many cases. The approaches and methods used to teach language differ substantially from those used to teach core subjects, and experienced teachers on cert courses quite often encounter challenges in making the shift.

Many would-be newbies assume that their summer camp counseling experience or Sunday school teaching will be considered relevant by employers; it won't.

Further, having studied a foreign language is helpful, but by no means does it guarantee to a potential employer that one knows how to teach!

The key component of on-site courses is supervised teaching practice with real students, with feedback on how you've done. No online course can substitute this (though a few also include a short onsite portion; this is better, but the on-site cert is still considered the normal standard most places).

Here in Prague, all onsite certs are accepted - the only drawback to the general brands are that you need to highlight clearly on your CV that your cert meets the standard of 120+ hours on site with the supervised teaching practice. Here in Prague, online certs are VERY rarely accepted (if ever) by reputable employers. Regardless of prior language learning or teaching experience.

I suggest you move over to Dave's Job Discussion forum, where there are country-specific boards, and where you can ask directly people who are in the country(ies) you are interested in what kind of cert you need.

best regards,
spiral
