Certification won't matter when it comes to a US citizen wanting to work in Italy. It's all about your passport (unless you have an additional one from an EU member country). There are hiring restrictions which require EU member citizens to be preferred - because there are scads of highly qualified British, Irish, and Scottish teachers out there, it's extremely rare that any employer can make a case to the government that they 'need' to hire a non-EU member citizen.
