Online Teaching English as Additional Language certificates are often unacceptable because there has been no supervised teaching component. However, there are other pitfalls. Some well known TEAL course providers state that they have not sought accreditation because many accreditation agencies are private and no longer government controlled so it is not worth their while to seek accreditation. This is a spurious argument and a disservice to students. Unrecognised accreditation agencies are immediately placed on several governmental and other websites. Another problem is that Online TEAL providers often do not list staff and assignment markers’ qualifications and experience. This is not so much a problem if they are accredited but it looks highly dubious if they are not. How would one employer choose between an applicant with a non-accredited qualification supervised by anonymous staff after lengthy studies; and another applicant with a certificate issued by a newly formed diploma mill falsely claiming residential study under “qualified” staff with common and therefore difficult to check names? I do not have a CELTA but that seems the best TEAL qualification to ensure a stable future in this discipline.
