I personally don't think it is as black and white a subject to be able to advise likewise. At ITTP we find that it is essentially the skills and marketability of the individual applying for the job which ultimately makes or breaks a teaching position offer. If you already have some foreign language teaching or study experience then an Online course will probably suffice but if you have little or none then the Onsite is advisable. It also depends though where you aim to be teaching because as an example in S.Korea a TEFL certificate is not required at all but having any TEFL certificate will increase your starting salary. again, it really depends on the individual. There are some terrible teachers out there with Onsite certs and some excellent ones with Online certs and visa versa.
Hope it helps!
