Being extremely elderly (67), highly experienced and well qualified, I can look back to years of similar experiences but will spare you the litany of miseries. In brief there is considerable justification in believing that if you claim prior experience you will be targeted. I was warned of this in the early 1970’s when there was a RSA certificate that finally developed into CELTA. I have been a DOS and head of a university TEFL department. I have M.TEFL, UK QTS and a PhD and it is clear that it would have helped my past career if I had taken a CELTA, not because it was of much use but because the TEFL industry is now dominated by CELTA holders who often cannot relate to any other qualification. For example, in 2008 I applied for a British university post in China and was looking forward at the interview to some searching questions. Instead I was extremely disappointed when merely asked how I would write a lesson plan. This was because the interviewers were BA holders with CELTA and from my experience such staff rarely measure up to the demands of teaching university students and consequently cannot effectively teach how to write academic essays or give oral presentations let alone assess anyone with a different academic background.
Every time I made CELTA course enquiries in person I encountered a somewhat aggressive attitude and was told, with no reason given, that it was doubtful I would pass. I felt they were dying to fail me, irrespective of performance, ostensibly to prove that their course standard was good but in reality to get revenge for some past personal setback inflicted by someone I resembled. The CELTA industry seems permanently rooted in a world where trainees should be young, inexperienced and obsequious and if you don’t fit that profile, you may be ill treated.
