On one hand, many schools in China are run by locals and 'operated' by whoever they can get who looks good/enthusiastic/subservient to whimsical business decisions on a daily basis; often 25-year olds with a few months ESL experience.
On the other hand, many schools in developed countries are members of associations that require DoSs to have an MA TESOL or MA Applied Linguistics, or at least a DELTA/Trinity DipTESOL (though apart from the observations function of that role, which can be delegated, the IDLTM is actually better for that job).
It would help if you told us more about your existing qualifications/experience.
