Input for a workshop please

Hello everyone,
I'm preparing a workshop on self directed teacher development through classroom action research. I've got two questions:
1. Have you ever tried new activities, new approaches, activities which you and others assumed learners 'wouldn't like or wouldn't work' in class?
2. How did you decide on this?
3. How did you reflect on it's progress?
4. How did you measure it's success? for example, if you're working on a freelance basis or where there's no academic management, how did you feel about asking your learners for feedback?
