In Response To: Re: Azusa Pacific University for the TESOL program (Blazingbob)

BlazingBob raises a widespread issue - Christian zealotry before quality education.

Many great universities and myriads of schools were founded as institutions of the Christian Church. Time was that you could happily work in one of them and shut yourself up in your room with a record player and a good read on Sunday when they were busy at the weekly church service. You could even tolerate with amusement the priest charging into class after Biology to write "Proofs why man is not descended from monkey" on the blackboard.

Now it has become all too intense. Prayers are held at every meeting and you are allocated people and issues to prayer for. You are constantly asked for your statement of faith and if you respond "good works" you are immediately suspect for being on the wrong track (maybe Catholics don't get upset about that). Fervour for Jesus seems all that matters. This is allied in my opinion to a movement to "win back" China to Christianity. If you investigate the backgrounds of many high ranking American policy makers, academics and diplomats in China, China Taipei, South Korea and Japan you will note they come from missionary families banned in China after 1949. US universities with campuses in China seem to hire an inordinate number of Christian zealots as staff.
