Teaching methods reflect changes in society and different choices of learning. I took French GCE Ordinary level in 1962 and can still read and understand but not speak French because at that time most Arts school leavers needed a knowledge of two written languages to enter University. A school friend was unable to stop laughing in the French oral exam and got zero out of 20. He still passed.

With consumer affluence travel became commonplace and teaching methods changed. In 1975 the Council of Europe emphasized the communicative method where a basic list of about 150 common situations of social interaction was drawn up such as giving personal details, asking for advice, ordering a meal, disagreeing with someone, finding a location etc. This also recognized that speaking a language is the fastest way to learn it. This communicative (functional) method has dominated foreign language teaching up to now but is being reassessed. Many nostalgic relics such as myself feel that language courses should be more diversified to suit individual requirements Some of this has already been accomplished with courses, for example, for diplomats, business, medicine, law, military peacekeeping, engineering, firefighting, community service, nursing, academic presentations, and cultural tourism.

The communicative method is very effective if taught well with students acting out interesting roles. I learnt spoken Japanese very rapidly that way. Attractive and relevant course material is naturally essential. Teachers should ascertain student requirements to avoid situations where middle aged Korean executives are asked for their opinion of torn jeans as a fashion statement and where the best place is to chill out.
