As a teacher of adults, I like to use the communicative method for the following reasons:
1. Whether the in class assignment is a test or hand in assignment, students put to use what is learned. There is a transfer from controlled training to real performance. For example, student writes a letter for a prospective job posting. Real life - real learning.
2. There is a focus on the message and the function, not just the form. The student needs to learn what skills need to be sold in English and not just on "how" the letter is formed to continue the above example.
3. There is group collaboration as well as individual work, not just the latter. In today's society people work in teams. Students need to learn how to convince other people of their point of view and also the role of consensus building.
4. The learners are called upon to use their resourcefulness in resolving authentic problems in language use as opposed to accuracy. Take the letter example. The students will be shown how to research sample letters and use the language learned to style their own letter. The more resourceful, the better sounding letter.
In the final analysis, a wise teacher will use a combination of all approaches as each approach carries its own unique style of language learning.
