Hi. I’ve been in the TEFL industry here in Prague for 13 years so would like to correct some of the above information. Yes, it is true that the school year is from September – June but there are over 100 language schools in Prague alone and most of them hire on a year-round basis. This is due to the fact that on average English language teachers only stay and teach for a year. A lot of the teachers are fresh college graduates who come here as a sort of gap year before going on to start a career. So teachers come and go which means replacements are needed. Also, schools are getting new contracts with clients and companies on a year-round basis so new teachers are also needed then. Where I work, we get job offers and calls from schools looking for teachers year-round, that is why TEFL courses run monthly, year round. Even in Feb, March, April, etc… TEFL graduates are finding work here. Of course there are more job offers in August as the beginning of the school year is September but there are also more job offers in February when the new semester begins.

We recommend that you bring about 12000czk to 16000czk for spending money during the month of the TEFL course of you plan on doing one in Prague. This includes the 8500czk housing fee. You can cut this amount down by not going out every night or by buying groceries and cooking and bringing your own lunches to the school.

If you plan to stay and teach in Prague after completing a TEFL course then we recommend that you bring 37000czk to 50000czk to get started for the first 2 months in addition to the money you bring for the month of the course. This includes spending money for two months after the course, rent for about two months, a security deposit, realtors fee, food and entertainment. In addition, visa/work permit costs for the Czech Republic are about 8000czk. Some people are choosing to get a Zivnonstensky List. There’s a company that can help you get this. This allows you to work on a business license making you more marketable and giving you more jobs to choose from. The cost for this is about 17,000czk. Some employers pay some of this fee others take increments out of your salary monthly.

If you are non-EU and taking a TEFL course here, the course should inform you plenty of time beforehand on what is needed before coming to the CR. In this case you won’t have problems getting your work permit or visa.

Feel free to contact me for more info. We are dealing with these things on a daily basis and are not having any problems.
