So yes, a CELTA will get you basic jobs in many countries, but if you want to make a career in ESL teaching then you do need something more (in the field; a PhD already is ‘more’, but as you say, in the wrong field to progress an ESL career).

An MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics is a common culmination of ESL academic studies (though there are a few PhDs). You need an MA to get work in most developed countries universities.

Bur if you want to work in a Language school, and progress to senior teacher / Director of Studies / Teacher Trainer roles. You tend to only need a Diploma; usually a Trinity DipTESOL or Cambridge DELTA.
Note that many universities accept either of these two diplomas as part credit towards an MA TESOL/Linguistics.

In fact, generally (though there are exceptions), most MAs are lacking in a practical teaching component and some people with them find that they can ONLY get work in Universities, not in language schools where they like more practical training.

There is also the Cambridge IDLTM if you are looking at management, and it is also accepted as part-credit towards an MA by some places.

An MA in EAP is rather focused and limited; fine if you want to have a career in university-related academic-preparation courses. But many TESOL MSs and Diplomas include EAP as part of the variety they look at.

Or did you want to work in a Secondary school (High school)? Then you’d need something else instead…in the UK a PGCE/PGDE, in New Zealand a GDipTchg, etc…
