"A CELTA class is more like an underfunded public high school class for low achievers."
No, it is usually taken post-degree by people wanting to make a start in the ESL profession. Though it is considered equivalent to a paper or two of an undergraduate course, so centres are free to take non-graduates if they think they can do it.
"I don't know about other schools, but one does not even need to speak proper English to get into the IH Budapest CELTA program."
No, all centres are moderated and you need a certain level, usually C1 on the CEFR. You are not expected to know a lot bout the language, as many English speakers don't learn this at school and the course is designed to help you find out about such things before you teach them."If some flunky interviewer at the bottom of the food chain..." I think you should check out the requirements to be CELTA trainer....
"Don't worry too much about grammar. CELTA trainers and teachers tend to have contempt for grammar. Knowing too much grammar is dangerous in a CELTA program. You always want to appear dumber than your trainers."
Part of this links to what I said earlier. Teaching English is not abut Grammar, it is bout a language that is in use and has many uses; it is about helping students use this to communicate effectively and in order to do this at higher level...hey, look, there's also grammar. So no, it does not focus on teaching grammar, but on discovering grammar through other activities"Keep in mind that a CELTA course does not teach you how to teach; instead, it teaches a formula for teaching. Demonstrate that you can do the formula..."
Yes, it is an initial training course in a month, designed to give trainees one or two models that they can safely use in the classroom to teach. As they stay on in the profession they will be exposed to other approaches and models through CPD."I prefer to use my certificate as toilet paper, but some people use them to get crappy jobs in backwaters." So you passed, ye somehow don't feel to have gained from the experience...
"You never have to physically exert yourself in a CELTA course,..."
Indeed, it is not the gym or army training"... so it is not strenuous." It is for those who have to learn about English and time management concurrent with the course.
"Cambridge ESOL has successfully hoodwinked employers into thinking that CELTA graduates can actually teach English..."
And along with the other equivalent ones (Trinity CertTESOL, SIT's, etc), they do so much better than untrained people or people trained online, in a weekend, etc.
