Generally Chinese employers expect English teachers to have a passport from an English speaking country. However I have worked in China with teachers from Mexico, Peru, Poland, Surinam, Nigeria, South Korea and India who all had "native" or "near native" English accents. I have however witnessed the sacking of American passport holders with strong West African accents who were long settled immigrants to the USA. In some cities such as Zhengzhou schools have great difficulty recruiting English teachers and are prepared to hire anyone so long as the students have no difficulty understanding them.
