I agree with Spiral there. In general, very different goals, activities, ad classroom management styles.
I actually qualified as a Maths teacher in 2009 (you need a second ‘curriculum subject’ when doing a PGCE/PGDE/GDipTchg), and was surprised to find that very recently the methods are a lot more about discovery learning, context based and group work, student talk time, etc. But there are many, many teachers who still do it ‘the old way’, mostly for classroom management reasons or to meet parents; expectations or time limits.
The ‘ESOL curriculum subject’ component of my Secondary teaching diploma concentrated more on helping students develop skills for the language requirements of the main curriculum subject o school, being a point-of-call for help from other teachers who have L2 students in their classes, and less on actually teaching ESL classes – which does make some sense for the context, but ignores the schools that DO have ESOL classes for the many L2 students there.
Having said that, during my ESL-specific training (in-house training and experience in Asia an E. Europe a decade ago, CELTA a few years ago, IDLTM a couple of years ago, trainers-training, DipTESOL nearly completed now), I have always found it odd that the methods we come to use are much more effective than those used by French/German, Chinese, etc language teachers in secondary schools (in the UK/US, Oz, etc, teaching it as a foreign language). I do feel that they could learn a lot, but many secondary schools see ESL teachers as more of ‘special needs assistant’ for the ‘special need’ of not knowing English very well; thus don’t want to get ideas from you.
