The Critic responds: UTTER RUBBISH. Spain has an independent tribunal that you can go to and get arbitration for anything including suing an employer that refuses to pay you for work you weren't supposed to be doing. The one in Madrid is in Calle Princesa. I know about it because I know people that have used it. Some of my friends are immigration lawyers and they frequently refer illegals to go there for compensation about almost anything. The tribunal makes no judgement at all about your legal status or whether you are or are not working illegally."
That's fantastic. However, the fact that such a tribunal exists in no way guarantees that an illegal teacher would actually be protected from an unscrupulous landlord or get money from a school that is paying him/her under the table. As we are on the level of personal anecdotes, I can state that I know of people who have lost wages and forfeited rents that they've paid out, without recompense - though they tried to get some legal assistance.
I also know people personally who have been caught and deported, and I know OF quite a few over the region who have been banned from the EU for up to five years (I don't know of anyone who's had the maximum penalty of ten year ban applied).
The bottom line is that it's fine to make a choice to work illegally. I'm not trying to tell anyone not to do it, if it's his/her choice.
My only beef is with people who try to minimise the potential risks when posting - anyone taking the chance should at least know what they are getting into, and understand what is the worst case - hopefully it won't happen!!
