What Nomad Soul has said is absolutely right. I just completed my Master in Applied Linguistics from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and when I applied my GPA was just below their cut-off mark posted on their department website but I also did my undergrad from Carleton and I knew a lot of professors that absolutely loved me and wrote awesome letters for me plus I had the luxury to go talk to the department secretary who told me about the people that read the admission essays and what they look for. I tailored my essay accordingly and also highlighted my experiences and I got a full admittance. I am proud to say I graduated with an A+ average and the lowest mark I ever received was an A- so it is totally possible to have a GPA that may not be stellar and still do amazing in Grad school. I absolutely LOVE the Linguistics department at Carleton, they are incredible people that are willing to go above and beyond for every student so if you're interested in applying there and need any info feel free to email me :-) I'm in China right now teaching but I'll be back on Canadian soil this September.
