In Response To: Re: Coming: online CELTA (Jeff Mohamed)

"As someone who regularly teaches on-site CELTA courses - I finished my latest one on Friday - I will be interested to see details of the proposed on-line CELTA. Until I know the details, I will keep an open mind."

The issue is not whether or not it retains its quality - the issue is that for years detractors have maligned other courses for offering distance mode, citing CELTA as one not willing to "go down that road", and now it is following the same path. Granted, Many have used the guided teaching as evidence for its 'superiority', but many have simply stated that it is the personal contact between trainer and trainee that is important. Whether you (and others) have been one of those pundits or not, you have never bothered to correct such claims, and through such silence you lend support to the mystical superiority of the course of which you have a vested interest in. It is one thing to post here that Ari is being rude to others, but apparently quite another to permit misinformation to be accepted as fact.

I can envision how the course will take shape. Instead of running a set 'course', centers will do business as usual, with the trainer holding down a full time / part time teaching position. Candidates may register at any time, and will watch videos of input sessions, then prepare lessons to be taught to the trainers' existing classes (or perhaps other teachers' classes, those teachers being given a 'break' from teaching for the day). Centers will circumvent students' apprehensions about trainee teachers by stating that the teacher (and also a qualified trainer) will be in attendance to smooth over any issues that may occur. Feedback will occur after the lesson as always, and guided lesson planning can be slotted in whenever.

Centers will save BIG on running courses with two trainers not bringing in money from teaching classes (you and others have repeatedly stated here that centers often run at break even due to high salaries paid to trainers). Instead of money going out to trainers, they will be earning it by having regular paying classes. Starting dates can be eliminated as registration can occur anytime.

I imagine it is in response to centers' concerns that they are being undercut by training courses of all shapes and sizes all over the world. What is meant to be a cost-saving procedure resulting in lower fees will likely mean most centers will charge the same fees as they always did, pocketing the extra, and perpetutating the myth that they are offering a superior product.

"One obvious benefit is that the proposed course should make the CELTA more accessible to people who are unable to take 4 weeks away from work in order to participate in an intensive training course. "

Yes, but they will still have to move to a city where there is an existing center. Apparently this will only be available to existing centers.

"However, Cambridge will need to set the new program up very carefully indeed if on-line CELTAs are to match the quality of on-site CELTAs. Much will depend upon how the practice teaching component is handled."

I dont foresee this as being a problem, as I oulined above. Trainees will probably not be able to get the benefit of watching other trainees' successes and failures, however.
