"The CELTA course is like painting by numbers, you are told what to do and there is little or no opportunity to experiment. It's a very trainer centred course rather than a student centred course. I've read on numerous web posts that "as long as you do what your trainer says then you'll pass." What happens after the course when your trainer isn't there?"
This seems to be a very simplistic appraisal of the CELTA course by The Critic. The course is aimed at people with little or no experience of teaching and basically sets out to give new teachers a foundation in practical teaching techniques and approaches. It follows that there is a lot of input from the trainers in terms of giving help and guidance, as any trainee should rightly expect.
However, the trainees should also be very involved in the learning process and, as a CELTA trainer myself, rather than stifling creativity, I have seen some very inspiring and creative lessons from new teachers, while sticking to the detailed criteria. Surely NOT doing what a trainer says on any course is counter productive? The Critic asks "What happens after the course when your trainer isn't there?" Well, the same as anyone on any course after it's finished, I would have thought - you get out there and try out what you've been taught. According to the implied logic of the question we would all crash our cars after passing our driving tests and driving without an instructor....
