spent conviction

Hi I wonder if anybody could give me some advice.
I only have a BTEC HND in an engineering profession but was looking to teach English in either Russia or Indonesia. Would an online approx 100hour TESOL course be good enough?
Also, rather embarassingly, I have a criminal conviction from back in 1990 for receiving stolen goods that landed me with a £50 fine. This is a spent conviction. But I have no idea to whether it would show up on any police checks. And if it did would it stop me from gaining employment. I think honesty is the best policy but should I even mention it, if asked as it is spent?
Thanks in advance for your help
